LAWRENCE, Kan. – A late Kansas softball rally wasn't enough as Missouri defeated the Jayhawks, 4-2, in the StorageMart Border Showdown on Wednesday evening at Arrocha Ballpark.
Kansas fell to 29-13 on the season, while Missouri improved to 23-22.Â
Missouri scored one run in each of the first two innings and held the lead until the sixth frame. In the bottom of the sixth Kansas tied the game at 2-2 scoring two runs on three hits. Jayhawk senior Aynslee Linduff hit a single up the middle to lead off the inning. The next batter, senior Presley Limbaugh singled through the right side of the infield putting Jayhawks on the corners with no outs. Two batters later junior Anna Soles hit a bases-clearing triple to the left field corner, scoring two runs for the Jayhawks.
Missouri's Abby Hay hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the frame, Kansas senior Emma Tatum walked. Two batters later, Limbaugh collected her second hit of the game which put the Jayhawks on the corners and the tying run on base. KU could not muster another run ending the game.Â
"I think that we were chasing some pitches early on, maybe not staying disciplined with ourselves," Kansas head coach Jennifer McFalls said. "They have a couple of really good pitchers, and they did a really nice job of keeping us off balance. We settled in and Anna (Soles) gave us a really nice spark with that triple, bringing in two runs that put us right back in the game. It was a good matchup."
