"I think we have played fundamental baseball," head coach
Dan Fitzgerald said about the recent stretch. "We talk about the key components of that – winning the strike zone, taking care of the ball on defense and then the big one is doing it situationally and offensively…they have holistically bought into the offensive process, the defensive process and the pitching process."
Â
Kansas (34-11, 17-4 Big 12) is riding a seven-game winning streak and finished the month of April with a 15-1 record. The Jayhawks have won 18 of their last 19 games and 24 of their last 27 contests. KU currently sits in first place in the Big 12 standings with a three-game lead. It's the best record in conference play through 21 games in school history.
Â
On Tuesday night, Kansas traveled to Wichita State and defeated the Shockers 14-1 in a run-rule victory. The win secured a perfect 9-0 regular season record against the four regional opponents to the north, south, east and west – Nebraska (2-0), Wichita State (2-0), Missouri (2-0) and Kansas State (3-0).
Â
KU has won six consecutive conference series after a sweep of Kansas State in Manhattan last weekend. Kansas has gone 9-0 in Big 12 home games this season. That marks the longest Big 12 home winning streak for Kansas in program history. The Jayhawks have won 17 of the last 19 conference games.
Â
Kansas is in the Top 25 for a third consecutive week. The Jayhawks came in ranked at No. 11 by D1Baseball, Baseball America, USA Today and the NCBWA. The No. 11 ranking is the highest since the end of the 1993 season, following a trip to the College World Series.
Â
Arizona (16-27, 7-14 Big 12) went to the College World Series a season ago but has been hit by the injury bug this year. The Wildcats have dropped their last three games after winning the opening game of their series against BYU and the finale of their series versus Kansas State. As a team, Arizona is hitting .257 offensively and the pitching staff has produced a 5.41 ERA.
