ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Kansas women's golf team sits tied for eighth place at the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional after the opening round on Monday, and finished with a score of 296 (+12).
"We struck the ball well, but we need to be sharp around the greens with easy up and down chips and our putting," Kansas head coach
Lindsay Kuhle said. "Today we could've been better in those two areas. If we continue to strike it like we did today and miss in the correct spots, along with a sharper short game, we'll climb the leaderboard."
Northwestern and Ohio State are tied for the lead after round one with a score of 5-under par, followed by USC at 2-under, Duke at 2-over, and UCF at 3-over to round out the top five in the 12-team event. The top five teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, held May 22-27 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa's Champions Course in Carlsbad, California. Additionally, the lowest-scoring individual not on an advancing team will also qualify for the NCAA Championship.
All-Big 12 sophomore
Ebba Nordstedt led the way for the Jayhawks with a score of 72 (+1) and sits tied for 22nd place in the 66-golfer field. Throughout the first round Nordstedt carded one birdie and an eagle on the 310-yard par-four 13th hole.
Seniors
Amy DeKock and
Anna Wallin sit tied for 33rd place, after both golfers carded a 74 (+3). Both golfers finished off their rounds strong, DeKock posting back-to-back birdies on her last two holes, while Wallin finished bogey-free through her last seven holes.
"I'm really proud of Amy's finish today going 2-under the last two to count her score, Anna who had a solid finish with a solid short game today, and Ebba's consistent round with her eagle on the 13th and birdie on her last hole. All three helped us a ton with the team score," Kuhle said.
Junior
Lyla Louderbaugh and freshman Kinslea both finished with scores of 76 (+5) and are both tied for 50th place individually. Louderbaugh carded one birdie on the day, while Jones tallied two birdies throughout the round.
"We tend to feel more confident and play our best golf as we see the course more and feel more comfortable, which I think the next two days will most definitely bring," Kuhle said.
