GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – Kansas women's golf senior Lyla Louderbaugh was named the recipient of the Dr. John Rooney Award, presented annually during the Folds of Honor Collegiate at American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Michigan. Louderbaugh was the female recipient, while Notre Dame's Jacob Modleski was the male honoree. Both were named the evening prior to the Folds of Honor Collegiate set to run Sept. 7-9.
In its second year, the Dr. John Rooney Award is presented to a collegiate team member who best exemplifies a commitment to education by earning exemplary grades and possesses the philanthropic qualities of Dr. John and Folds of Honor. All team members from the respective schools in the Folds of Honor Collegiate are eligible to receive the Dr. John Rooney Award. The award is chosen by a committee comprised of Folds of Honor and tournament representatives.
The Folds of Honor was founded by Lieutenant Colonel Dan Rooney, a former golfer at Kansas, who presented Louderbaugh and Modleski with the award. Since its inception in 2007, Folds of Honor has awarded nearly 73,000 scholarships totaling over $340 million to children of US Military members and first responders fallen or wounded in the line of duty.
Heading into her senior season in 2025-26, Louderbaugh, from Buffalo, Missouri, has had a stellar collegiate career in which she has won two tournaments, including the 2025 NCAA Columbus Region helping Kansas advance to the NCAA Championship. As a junior in 2025-26, Louderbaugh won the Yale Invitational in May 2026, recorded four top five finishes and placed in the top 20 eight times.
A three-time member of the WGCA All-American Scholar Team who will graduate from Kansas with a finance degree, Louderbaugh has competed in each of the last three U.S. Women's Amateurs and in 2025 she advanced to the semifinals in match play of the event.
Both the Kansas women's and men's golf teams are competing in the Folds of Honor Collegiate, Sept. 7-9. Fans can stay up to date with the event by checking the live scoreboard.
ABOUT DR. JOHN ROONEY (per Folds of Honor)
It is because of Dr. John Rooney's passion, commitment and dedication that Folds of Honor and the Folds of Honor Collegiate exist today. Selfless by nature, Dr. John was a tireless supporter of Folds of Honor, and served as an inspiration to the organization's Founder and CEO—his son, Lt Col Dan Rooney—who witnessed the life-changing work his father did as a college professor. Until his passing in April, 2025, Dr. John exemplified the foundation's mission: Honor Their Sacrifice. Educate Their Legacy. He was Folds' first Board member and was always there to lend counsel, guidance and support. Grand Haven Golf Club, the golf course the Rooney family purchased in 1998, was the birthplace of Folds of Honor, and more than 20 years later was reimagined by Jack Nicklaus and re-opened in May 2021 as American Dunes Golf Club. In his blessed life, Dr. Rooney earned a PhD, specializing in economic and urban geography; taught at colleges from California to Wyoming to England; served as department head at Oklahoma State; was a pioneer in database research and marketing; served as lead researcher for the NY Times Leisure Division, which included Golf Digest; and was an avid golfer who once played to a 2-handicap.
