LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas Baseball will play in its first Super Regional and host the first ever Lawrence Super Regional this weekend at Hoglund Ballpark. The Jayhawks will face Oklahoma in a best-of-three series, beginning on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
"This is another opportunity to compete for a championship," head coach
Dan Fitzgerald. "A conference regular season title, a conference tournament championship, a regional championship and going for another one against another awesome team. It's another great challenge."
Kansas (45-16, 22-8 Big 12) is appearing in its first Super Regional in school history after sweeping the Lawrence Regional last weekend. KU defeated Northeastern in the opener and then beat Arkansas in back-to-back games to advance.
Since the Super Regional format was introduced for the 1999 season, Kansas is the ninth school and only the second team in the last 20 years to host its first NCAA Regional and Super Regional in the same season (Illinois – 2015). KU is the third Big 12 school to do it, behind Nebraska in 2001 and Baylor in 1999.
Kansas is one of two teams nationally to win its conference's regular season title outright, conference tournament title and advance to the Super Regionals (Georgia). The run for the Jayhawks did not come easy as Kansas had eight losses through the first 18 games of the season and since, only has eight losses in the last 43 games. The Jayhawks were 10-8 through March 14 and have gone 35-8 since March 15.
In the Lawrence Regional opener, Kansas broke three school records in the span of two innings.
Tyson LeBlanc hit his 22nd home run of the season in the third inning to break Tony Thompson's record from 2009. The home run also surpassed the team's home run record that was set in 2025. In the fourth inning,
Dominic Voegele recorded his 113th strikeout of the season to pass Mike Zagurski's record that was set in 2005.
KU has tied the school record with 45 wins this season. The Jayhawks set the record in 1993, the only year Kansas has ever made the College World Series.
Oklahoma (36-22, 14-16 SEC) earned a No. 2 seed in the Atlanta Regional last weekend. The Sooners won against The Citadel in their opener before dropping the second game to No. 2 national seed Georgia Tech. Oklahoma was forced to fight back and did so by winning three elimination games, including two against Georgia Tech to advance to Super Regionals. The Sooners are have posted a .287 batting average as a team and hold a 5.28 ERA.
