Jerise Freeman is in her first season at Kansas after joining the women’s basketball staff in April 2025 as the program’s new Assistant Head Coach.
The Wichita, Kansas, native comes to KU with 18 years of collegiate experience, including stops at three other power conference schools in Oregon, Utah and Oklahoma State.
Freeman returns to her home state following two seasons at Oregon, where she served as an Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator for the Ducks. Oregon won 20+ games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in both seasons, reaching the second round each year. Freeman tutored three players who earned All-Big Ten honors during her time in Eugene.
Prior to Oregon, Freeman spent three seasons at Utah, where she helped lead the Utes to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2023. Her first season in Salt Lake City saw the Utes reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011, setting a single-season record 312 made three-points in the process. Under Freeman’s tutelage, guard Gianna Kneepkens was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year that season. Freeman also coached 2023 Pac-12 Player of the Year Alissa Pili, who was then selected eighth overall in the WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx, becoming the program’s highest draft pick since 2006.
Freeman has also previously coached in the Big 12, where she spent four seasons as an Assistant Coach at Oklahoma State. While in Stillwater, she helped guide the Cowgirls to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2018 and 2021, with OSU advancing to the second round both times. During her time with OSU, five players earned All-America honors, including two who were drafted into the WNBA in Loryn Goodwin and Natasha Mack.
Prior to her time in Stillwater, Freeman spent three seasons as an assistant at Eastern Washington, where the Eagles finished with a 19-14 record in her final season and reached the semifinals of the Women’s Basketball Invitational.
Freeman also spent two seasons in her hometown at Newman University after serving as Missouri State’s director of operations in 2011-12. She got her full-time start in collegiate coaching at Butler CC in 2008.
Freeman played collegiately at Division I University of the Pacific for two seasons, earning honorable mention All-Big West Conference accolades as a senior in 2006-07. She began her college career at Seward County Community College, where she helped the Lady Saints to a 67-8 record and two NJCAA Region VI titles.
A Wichita native, Freeman enjoyed a standout prep career in which she led Wichita Heights High School to back-to-back Kansas 6A state championships and a 45-5 record over her final two seasons as a Falcon. Freeman earned a bachelor's degree in sociology with an emphasis in criminal justice from Pacific in 2007.
