OREM, Utah – Despite taking an early lead, No. 17 Kansas was unable to hold off Utah Valley and suffered a 2-1 defeat on Thursday night at UCCU Stadium in Orem, Utah. Jillian Gregorski scored the lone goal for the Jayhawks.

"Congrats to Utah Valley," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "We snuck one from them last year, and they competed really hard. They are very passionate. This is a tough one because we were up 1-0, and we didn't start very well, but Jill found another goal, and after that, we settled in, and it looked like we were going to get a second. But I thought we settled way too much. I didn't think we shot to score. It's just disappointing when things go against you."

Kansas (3-2) was able to strike first for the fourth time this season, scoring in the 15th minute of the match. The Jayhawks drew a corner kick, where Livvy Moore kicked the ball to the far post to Gregorski, who took a header towards the back post and past the Utah Valley keeper to score and give the Jayhawks a 1-0 lead.

Utah Valley (1-2-1) responded with two goals to take a 2-1 lead just before halftime. In the 36th minute, Malia Jessop scored on a header to even the score, before Sadie Beardall scored on a lobbed kick over KU keeper Sophie Dawe in the 38th minute. The Wolverines took the 2-1 lead into the half.

Coming out in the second half down a goal, Kansas upped the pressure on the offensive side. In the 55th minute, Jordan Rowan was able to get past the last line of the UVU defense and had a one on one with the keeper and took a shot, but it hooked just right of the post for a Utah Valley goal kick.

The Jayhawks were able to generate a few chances later in the half, but couldn't capitalize. As the match drew to a close, Emma Frey possessed the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and took a strike towards the bottom left corner of the goal, but the keeper was able to get a hand on the ball, preventing the score.

The Wolverines were able to prevent any other chance by Kansas, closing out the match 2-1 in favor of Utah Valley. Kansas held a 16-7 advantage in shots and 5-1 in corners.
