DALLAS — Sonia Smagina and Roxana Manu captured the doubles championship of the top-flight highlighting day two of the SMU Fall Invitational on Saturday. Julia Deming advanced to the singles quarterfinals of the Mustang Draw before falling in the semifinals, while the Jayhawks posted five wins in the Hilltop draw.

In doubles play, Smagina and Manu took on South Carolina’s Chinellato and Shelton early Saturday morning for the championship round. The sophomore and freshman pair defeated USC 7-5.

KU’s Deming set the tone in singles with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of her flight. She later fell to SMU by the score of 6-3, 7-5 to end her run in the tournament.
The afternoon fared well for the Jayhawks as the team posted an 5-1 record in the Hilltop flight. KU had three performing in the consolation bracket. Manu beat Wicker of USC in a back-and-forth battle (6-7 [2], 7-6 [3], 10-6). Smagina got the better of Kansas State’s Maffei with a 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 result. Luniuska Delgado defeated Wichita State in straight sets (6-1, 6-3).

In the consolation semifinals, Smagina picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win against Wichita State. As a result of the shaping of the bracket, Delgado competed against teammate Manu and came out on top defeating her 6-4, 6-2.
KU will wrap up competition in Dallas on Sunday. Delgado and Smagina will go head-to-head in the consolation finals on Sunday at 8 a.m. CT.
