PORTLAND, Ore. – Former Kansas track star Kyle Clemons concluded his weekend at the IAAF World Indoor Championships by aiding in a victory for Team USA’s 4×400-meter relay Sunday. The American squad passed the baton around in a 2016 world-leading time of 3:02.45 to collect the gold medal, the second for Clemons as a part of an American relay team at the international level.
Clemons, who competed for the Jayhawks from 2010-13, ran the opening leg for the American 4×400-meter relay squad inside the Portland Convention Center and got his team started off on the right foot. Clemons completed his leg with a 46.47 split and handed off the baton with the Americans in front. The U.S. squad preceded to pull away from the field over the next 1,200 meters and completed the fastest indoor 4×4 relay of the year, clocking in at 3:02.45 to earn the gold.
The gold was Clemons’ second after he was also a member of the 4×400-meter relay team that claimed gold at the last IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland two years ago.
The Rowlett, Texas native will now turn his attention to the outdoor campaign as he looks to qualify for the Team USA contingent that will compete at the Rio Olympics later this summer.
