DES MOINES, Iowa – After a win in the season opener on Thursday, Kansas will stay on the road and face Drake on Sunday afternoon at Mediacom Stadium. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Kansas (1-0) will be looking to build off its 2-1 victory against South Dakota State on Thursday night. After going down 1-0 in the 20th minute of the match, the Jayhawks responded with two goals in the next 15 minutes to build a lead that stood for the remainder of the contest.
"We were happy with the result on Thursday night at South Dakota State," first-year head coach Nate Lie said. "Having said that, we have a lot of areas that we need to improve in to get a result against a talented Drake team. Sunday is going to be a good challenge for us as we look to take a step forward."
Freshmen
Jillian Gregorski and
Shea Ryan each scored a goal on Thursday in their first career game. Gregorski and Ryan assisted on each other's goals as well. Junior
Lexi Watts and redshirt junior
Emika Kawagishi also recorded an assist in the match.
The Jayhawks had 22 players step on the pitch against South Dakota State, with 13 of them making their Kansas debut. Redshirt freshman
Sophie Dawe was one of those players making her debut, as she played all 90 minutes in net and made four saves to earn her first career win.
ABOUT DRAKE
Drake (0-0-1) also kicked off its season on Thursday night. The Bulldogs played to a 1-1 draw at St. Thomas. Last season, Drake finished with a record of 13-4-3 and was the Missouri Valley Conference regular season champion. The Bulldogs were picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley Conference this season.
