Kansas Tennis Battles for 4-1 Victory over Iowa

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas women's tennis team prevailed in a 4-1 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes at the Jayhawk Tennis Center, concluding a 3-0 opening weekend.
The Jayhawks notched wins against Kansas City (7-0) and Creighton (4-0) on Friday, followed by a hard-fought 4-1 victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes on Sunday. The 3-0 start marks Kansas' first since the 2015-16 season.
"It was a great opening weekend. The goal is to win and to finish 3-0 this weekend is big for our team," head coach Todd Chapman said. "Today was a great battle. It was a good team. Iowa is a great team that's going to win a lot of matches this year and it was a great early season battle where we had to dig deep and respond and find ways to battle through adversity. I feel fortunate that we came out on the right side of it on the scoreboard, but more than anything, we fought and we played hard and that's what you need."
Kansas won its first doubles match of the day with the No. 53 preseason ranked duo of Heike Janse Van Vuuren and Gracie Mulville defeating Iowa's Barbora Pokorna and Tereza Dejnozkova 6-3 on court one.Â
Action finished up on court three, as the pair of Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina defeated Marisa Schmidt and Pia Kranholdt 6-4 for the Jayhawks' first point of the day. Jasmine Adams and Kyoka Kubo's No. 2 doubles match went unfinished as they trailed 5-4.Â
In singles action, the Jayhawks dropped the first duel, but finished the match by winning the next three duels. In No. 1 singles, Mulville defeated Daianne Hayashida in a 7-5, 6-3 victory. In No. 2 singles, Maria Titova dropped the first set to Dejnozkova 6-1, but battled back to win 6-2, 6-2. Kansas won the match in No. 4 singles, as Adams defeated Nikita Vishwase in a close 6-4, 7-6 (7) victory to clinch the match.
After dropping the first set 6-0, Kubo battled back to a second set victory 6-2, before the match went unfinished in the third set.Â
On court five, freshman Meriem Ben Ezzedine dropped her first match of the season to Iowa's Barbora Pokorna, 6-3, 6-2. Kansas' Yerkezhan Arystanbekova led a strong effort on court six, where she led 6-2, 6-7 (2), 1-0, before going unfinished.
