LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas Rowing team welcomed Kansas State, Creighton, and the University of Tulsa for their first home race of the 2025-2026 season and to close to their fall schedule on the Kansas River.
"I think we had two big successes today. I thought from an event hosting standpoint, everything went smooth thanks to great efforts from our staff," said head coach Andrew Derrick. "Even more importantly the team did a great job from a performance standpoint. There are clearly things to improve upon as you would expect in October, but the team showed great improvement and depth across the whole roster. I am particularly impressed with our 3rd Eight's performance and the statement some those athletes made today about where they should sit come springtime. The Novice 8+ also did great especially for their first ever outing. All in all, very happy of our squad's effort and execution today and a big thank you to the Creighton's, Kansas State's, and Tulsa's staff and student-athletes for making the trip. Great competitors and racing all around."
For Flight 1 beginning at 10:45 a.m., two Kansas crews placed within the top five with the 2nd Eight's boat taking 4th with a time of 16:13.336 and the 1st Eight's boat coming in as runner-up behind Tulsa's 1st Eight's boat with a time difference of 1 second. Tulsa's 2nd Eight's crew placed 3rd and Kansas State's 1st Eight's boat took 5th.
The race then took an hour and fifteen-minute mid-morning break before continuing on with Flight 2 at 12:30 p.m. The University of Tulsa's 4+A boat finished first with a time of 17:01.898, with KU crews taking the remaining spots of the top 5. The Kansas IV 8 boat finished 6 seconds behind the victors with a time of 17:07.616, the Novice 8+ boat placed 3rd with a time of 17:14.496 in their first competition, the 4+B crew finished just milliseconds after them to claim 4th place, and then the 4+A boat took up 5th a completed time of 17:23.361 to wrap up the racing for this event.
