LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas rowing is pleased to announce the newest additions to the coaching staff with the hiring of Andreas Sloth as assistant coach and Benjamin Fields as boathouse manager.
"I am very excited to be adding both Andreas and Ben to our staff," says head coach Andrew Derrick.
Sloth joins the Jayhawks after having a successful assistant coach and recruiting coordinator position with the Washington State women's rowing team, where he also earned a master's in educational psychology. Sloth returns to Kansas, where he previously served as a volunteer assistant coach with the rowing team during the 2022-23 season.
"I meet Andreas several years ago when we were both coaching in the Pacific Northwest and was impressed by his knowledge and work ethic right away," Derrick added. "I knew if the opportunity presented, I'd love to work together someday. Seeing how excited he was about the direction the Kansas program is going made this a very easy decision. He will bring great fresh perspective to our staff, especially with his Danish background, but he has also already meshed well with the great staff we have in place"
Before moving to the United States, Sloth spent over six years with the Danish Student Rowing Club in Copenhagen, serving as head coach for the club's elite women's and junior programs, earning Denmark's highest coaching certification. During his tenure, he coached multiple national championship crews and guided athletes to international success, including appearances at the U23 and U19 World Championships, European Championships, World Coastal Championships, and Head of the Charles Regatta.
As a coach, Sloth's diverse background makes him a dedicated teacher for fostering success, while helping student-athletes grow to their highest potential.
Fields will enter the boathouse manager position this upcoming season, bringing expertise in business operations, as well as a record of success in the rowing community.
"Ben brings a wealth of experience to manage our exceptional facility on the banks of the Kansas River," said Derrick. "He has been in a similar role at Duke previously but also spent a lot of time behind the megaphone as a coach and as a program director at various clubs, so he has a great understanding of the big picture. It was clear early in the process he was going to be a great addition to our program. We are very excited to welcome him to Lawrence."
Throughout his career, Fields has demonstrated a proven ability to cultivate select student-athletes on and off the water with past leadership careers at multiple high-level institutions, including Duke, Stony Brook, Steel City Rowing Club, Friends of Port Rowing, Resolute Racing, and DeMatha Catholic High School.
In addition to his coaching experience, Fields conveys extensive knowledge in business operations and strategic planning as the founder and former CEO of Blue Line Rowing Services. Fields also earned a Bachelor of Arts in business and sports management from Marietta College in 2015.
With the combination of a professional background and a passion for building successful programs, Fields has established him as a respected leader within the rowing community and among the Kansas coaching staff.
Both Sloth and Fields will join Derrick and the Kansas staff in preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
