DURHAM, N.C. – No. 3-seeded Kansas will play in the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in program history on Thursday afternoon, when the Jayhawks travel to Durham, North Carolina, to take on the No. 6-seeded Louisville Cardinals at Koskinen Stadium. The match is slated to begin at 3 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Kansas (15-5-3) moved on to the second round of the tournament by defeating California Baptist 3-1 on Nov. 14.
Saige Wimes,
Jillian Gregorski, and
Faith Johnston all scored goals in the first half, which were the most goals in any half in an NCAA Tournament match in program history.
"We're going to have to find out to what extent are we just straight out winners," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "And to what extent do we have the person who's going to will us to that victory, and how deep are we willing to go. The teams that do special things usually have special players pulling them along. That's where we'll see who does that."
Kansas moved to 9-10-0 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and won its first tournament match since 2019. Wimes' goal in the fourth minute was the second fastest goal scored by a Kansas player in an NCAA Tournament match. It was the fourth time in program history that Kansas scored three goals in an NCAA Tournament match and the Jayhawks set a new NCAA Tournament program record with 12 shots on goal. KU finished the match with five assists, which were the second most in an NCAA Tournament match in program history.
In 2025, Kansas has set new single-season records in goals (48) and corner kicks (154), while having its second most points (144) and assists (48). Both of those school records were set in 2004 with 147 points and 53 assists.
Defender Caroline Castans was named to the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week on Tuesday for her two-assist performance against CBU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 14. It is the second time this season that she has been named to the team, as she was selected to the team on Sept. 23. She recorded her 12th and 13th assists of the season, which put her in a tie for the most assists in a single season in program history with Whitney Berry in 2011. Her two assists matched Caroline Smith for the most ever by a Jayhawk in an NCAA Tournament game.
Kansas will be seeking its third trip to the Sweet Sixteen in program history, and the first since 2019.
