LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 15-ranked Kansas soccer will begin its 2026 season on Wednesday, Aug. 12, as the Jayhawks will welcome the Utah State Aggies to Rock Chalk Park for the season opener. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. CT, and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
"It's surreal," third-year Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "The season got here fast, but we're getting ready to kick it off. I feel like it's a privilege and a responsibility being the one to kick off the season for Kansas Athletics, but we're very excited for this to get started."
The Jayhawks are ranked No. 15 in both the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll and the TopDrawerSoccer preseason poll. It is the second straight season in which Kansas was ranked in the TDS preseason poll. The No. 15 ranking is the highest preseason ranking by USC in program history.
The 2025 season was a historic one as Kansas finished with a 16-6-3 record and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for just the third time in program history. KU also ended the year No. 10 in RPI and ranked No. 13 in the final United Soccer Coaches poll. The Jayhawks set new single-season records in goals (51), corner kicks (172) and points (154). The 16 wins were also the fourth most in school history.
Kansas was tied for third in the 2026 Big 12 Preseason Poll, which is voted on by the league's head coaches. The third place spot in the poll is the highest preseason mark for Kansas in program history. The first preseason poll was conducted prior to the 2000 season. The Jayhawks had two players represented on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team, as senior Caroline Castans and junior Jillian Gregorski were selected. Kansas also had two players named to United Soccer Coaches preseason watch lists. Senior Sophie Dawe was named to the goalkeepers watch list and Castans was named to the defenders watch list.
ABOUT UTAH STATE
Utah State finished the 2025 season with a 10-6-7 record and 5-2-3 in the Mountain West Conference. The Aggies advanced to the NCAA Tournament after winning the MWC Tournament, falling to BYU in the first round following a 1-1 (6-7 PKs) loss.Â
SERIES HISTORY
Kansas played Utah State for the first time on Aug. 24, 2025, a match that ended in a scoreless draw. Wednesday's meeting is the second meeting between the Jayhawks and the Aggies all-time.
