FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 7 seeded Kansas will match up against the No. 3 seed Colorado Buffaloes in the Big 12 Tournament Semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 5 at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Kansas (13-4-3, 6-4-1 Big 12) advanced to the semifinal round of the Big 12 Tournament for the second straight year with a 4-0 victory over No. 2 seeded West Virginia on Monday evening. The Jayhawks have won five straight Big 12 Tournament games dating back to last season and matched their most goals in a Big 12 Tournament game in school history.
"In a tournament, you want to celebrate the win you just had, but you have to shift focus to the next game on a short turnaround," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "We need to carry the momentum and energy from last game into this game against Colorado, who is one of the best offensive teams in the country. We need to start the match on the front foot, and when we do, good things tend to happen. They came out on top last time, but I think our group will be motivated to respond and make up for that result."
The Jayhawks had four players score goals in Monday evening's win, with Mackenzie Hammontree scoring her first career goal and Jocelyn Herrema scoring her first goal of the season. Kate Langfelder and Lexi Watts each added a goal too.
Four Jayhawks received All-Big 12 honors on Tuesday. The four selections is the most in a season for Kansas since 2016. Caroline Castans was named Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was named All-Big 12 First Team for the second straight year. Watts was also named to the All-Big 12 First Team for a second year in a row. Midfielders Jillian Gregorski and Langfelder were picked as All-Big 12 Second Team selections. It was Langfelder's first career All-Big 12 selection. Gregorski received her second All-Big 12 accolade after she was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team last season.
Kansas remained in the TopDrawerSoccer poll this week, sitting at No. 25. The Jayhawks' highest ranking this season was on Sept. 23, when Kansas was ranked No. 14 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and No. 9 in the TopDrawerSoccer poll. The Jayhawks are also currently ranked 12th in RPI.
Kansas is second in the Big 12 with 43 goals scored this year and is 26th in the country in corner kicks per game, averaging 6.50 corner kicks per match. Watts is tied for sixth in the conference and leads Kansas with 10 goals and 23 points. Castans is tied for sixth in the country and second in the Big 12 in assists this year. She leads the Jayhawks with a career-high 11 assists, surpassing her total of six from last year. Castans is also third in program history for the most assists in a single season. Gregorski is ninth in the Big 12 with eight goals.
