LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Kansas Track & Field team opened its 2025-26 indoor season Wednesday with its intrasquad meet at Anschutz Sports Pavilion in Lawrence, Kansas. The Crimson team defeated the Blue team 88-76 in an afternoon filled with events and competition between the athletes.Â
Kansas horizontal jumps coach and Blue team head coach Brian Wellman was excited for the athletes to be back out on the track again. It's good to be back on the track…I love seeing that we are competing, that's the key component. In my speech at our team meeting I told everybody that [competing well] is the goal. We're not in peak shape to run our ultimate performances, we're still in training, but the one thing you can control is your competition level and if you show up and give effort. I saw a bunch of people showing up and giving their best efforts, so that was great.
The Jayhawks started the morning with the women's 500 meter dash in which Pearl Awanya scored the first five points for the Blue team while the Crimson and Blue finishers alternated after her.
The Crimson team responded quickly, however, when newcomer John Swabik won the men's 60 meter hurdles as the only Crimson competitor in the field of five. Fellow transfer Sky Hagan won the women's 60 meter hurdle immediately after Swabik, drawing the score back to nearly even.
Mason Meinershagen took down Madi Snody in the pole vault to stack another win for Crimson but then Michael Joseph and Devan Mathis finished first and second in the men's 500 meter dash to pull Blue right back into it.Â
Hagan won her second event of the day with a win in the 60 meter dash before Jack Markstrom won the men's 700 meter run for the Crimson team. In response, Ayden Christiansen won the men's 60 meter dash for the Blue team to continue the back and forth streak the teams had.Â
The Crimson team responded, however, by rattling off seven straight event wins. Ashton Barkdull began the run with a men's pole vault win, followed by Kierson Wicks winning the men's high jump.
Team captain Kori Randle then swept the women's long jump and triple jump to build a sizable lead for the Crimson team. Weston Van Camp and Addie Cline added some breathing room for Crimson in the weight throws before Maddie Fey won the women's shot put for Crimson. Dimitrios Antonatos ended the Crimson winning streak by finishing first in the men's shot put.
The two teams split the final individual races, with Crimson's Lillian Harris winning the women's 300 meter dash while Tristan Williams won the men's 400 meter dash for the Blue team.
With the meet all but wrapped up, the two teams participated in a full team 8x200 meter relay infinity. The Blue team was able to capture the final event win, beating Crimson by only 0.18 seconds after nearly 12 minutes of running, but it was too little too late as Crimson held on to win the meet 88-76.Â
Despite the loss, coach Wellman was encouraged by the meet and is excited to get back to training. There's no rush [to get to the season]...we're on pace. Things that we worked on in practice, we saw some progression in today. It's all a process and so you aren't always in a hurry. We want to be good when it's time to be good and show up when it's time to show up, that's the key and I think we are right on schedule and that's the goal.
