LA QUINTA, Calif. – Kansas Men's Golf will open their 2025 spring season in La Quinta, California, taking part in The Prestige at PGA West, Feb. 17-19.
"It's the first event of the spring and I know the guys are excited to get started," said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. "I have been really impressed by their preparation since the spring season started. This field is really good and the golf course is a great test of golf. I think the key this week for us is to get off to a good start and build on that each day."
Bermel, who is in his 13th season at Kansas, will take a lineup that is headlined by senior Gunnar Broin, who leads the team in scoring average and is ranked No. 67 individually. Junior Luke Honner joins sophomores Max Jelinek and Noah Holtzman, and the lineup is rounded out by Freshman Ty Lasley. Junior Will King will not participate in the tournament due to an injury.
Broin finished the fall season with an 18-hole scoring average of 70.43, good for the best on the team. Broin's fall season was highlighted by three top-10 appearances, along with three match wins to boost Kansas to fourth place at the Big 12 Match Play tournament in Houston.
Holtzman, in his first season in the lineup, was a key factor for the Jayhawks in the fall. Holtzman opened the season firing back-to-back 220's at the Folds of Honor Collegiate and the Bearcat Invitational. Holtzman then capped off his fall season with a season-low 204 at the Ka'anapali Classic in Hawaii, where he finished in a tie for 14th individually.
Jelinek and Honner have both chipped in impressive rounds for Kansas in the fall season. Jelinek opened the Ka'anapali Classic with an opening round of 65, the best 18-hole score by a Jayhawk this fall. Honner also fired a timely 68 at the Ka'anapali Classic, helping Kansas to a third-place finish in a loaded field.
Lasley is getting his first chance to compete in a stroke play event this season. Lasley comes to Kansas from Blue Valley West High School in Overland Park, where he was selected as a member of the 2023 6A First Team All-State, helping lead the Jaguars to an EKL title.
Kansas will begin teeing off on Monday at 1:55 p.m. CT on the 10th hole, as the Jayhawks are grouped up with Oregon State and Florida Atlantic.
