SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Kansas battled Utah in game two of their Big 12 series but fell short despite a late push. The Jayhawks managed two runs on four hits, but their comeback effort wasn't enough to even the series, as Utah secured the win at 5-2.
"Every game is important. We're down two right now," said Head Coach Jennifer McFalls." But we have to show up and focus on ourselves tomorrow. We had a chance to grab momentum in the first inning and didn't capitalize. They're swinging with confidence, and we need to find a way to shift that back in our favor."
The Jayhawks got off to a strong start at the plate with back-to-back singles from juniors Presley Limbaugh and Anyslee Linduff. However, Kansas couldn't capitalize, leaving runners stranded.
Utah quickly took control, jumping ahead 2-0 with a two-run RBI double. The Utes kept the momentum going in the second inning, tacking on two more runs to extend their lead to 4-0 after two frames.
Neither team converted in the third inning but, Utah added another run in the bottom of the fourth.
Into the fifth, Kansas was looking to shift momentum as they started to put pressure on the Utes with the rally started by Freshman Karsen Griggs who earned a walk, and followed by a double by September Flanagan moved both her and Griggs in scoring position.
With two outs and the top of the order up, the Jayhawks got on the board as Limbaugh ripped a hard grounder to the pitcher, allowing Griggs to score. The run cut into Utah's lead, making it a 5-1 game.
Kansas continued to chip away at Utah's lead in the sixth, as Campbell Bagshaw delivered a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing home Hailey Cripe from second. The Jayhawks inched closer, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
In their final at-bat, Kansas looked for a rally. Natalie Marshall fought through a nine-pitch at-bat to reach base, with Bailey Weber entering as a pinch runner. With two outs and the top of the order up, the Jayhawks had one last chance but couldn't capitalize, as Utah secured the 5-2 victory.
