SARASOTA, Fla. – First spring action for Kansas Women's Rowing is set for March 28-29 in Sarasota, Florida, as the Jayhawks return to the water for the Sarasota 2k.
The 2025 campaign starts Friday at 1 p.m. CT with the 1 Varsity 8 +, 2 Varsity 8+ and 1 Varsity 4+ boats competing in a time trial to determine placement for races later in the evening and on Saturday.
The 3 Varsity 8+ race is slated to start at 2:20 p.m. The 1 Varsity 4+ will return between 3:30-3:50 p.m., the 2 Varsity 8+ at 4-4:20 p.m., as the 1 Varsity 8+ will wrap up day one of competition at 4:50-5:10 p.m.
The 2 Varsity 4+ kicks off finals on Saturday at 7 a.m., before the 3 Varsity 8+ takes off at 7:16 a.m. At 8:40 a.m., final 1 Varsity 4+ races will start followed by 2 Varsity 8+ at 9:10 a.m. The Jayhawks will conclude their weekend with 1 Varsity 8+ racing beginning at 11 a.m.
Over two hundred athletes are competing for the Benderson Cup in a 2,000 meter sprint, including top-25 competition from No. 18 Alabama and No. 19 North Carolina. The team that collects the most points throughout racing will be awarded the cup.
Kansas will join other Big 12 foes in pursuit of the cup including No. 25 UCF, Kansas State, Tulsa, West Virginia and Old Dominion.Â

The Jayhawks are coming off a program-best fall where it had all boats finishing in the top 10 of the races participated in, including half of those crowned as champions between the Jayhawk Jamboree, Head of the Oklahoma and Head of the Charles – the world's largest three-day regatta.Â
Sophomore
Gracie Shepherd was named to the
FSN Spring Athlete Watchlist for Women's Rowers and Coxswains earlier this year on Feb. 12. Shepherd was awarded Outstanding Freshman of the Year by the Kansas Women's Rowing team last season and helped the Women's Club 4+ boat to a victory at the Head of the Charles last fall in a race that featured 50 boats. She was also a part of the Collegiate Varsity 8+ boat that won at the Jayhawk Jamboree on November 2, 2024.Â
