MARICOPA, Ariz. – Kansas Men's Golf continues its spring season at the Cowboy Classic in Maricopa, Arizona, competing in 36 holes on Monday, March 31, followed by 18 holes on April 1, at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
The Jayhawks return to Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club for the fourth consecutive season, where they tied for seventh place last year and finished as runners-up in 2022.
"Southern Dunes is a golf course we have played many times, so there is a comfort level we typically don't have playing on the road," said Kansas Head Coach
Jamie Bermel. "We have had a good week of practice and I know the guys are excited to play Southern Dunes."
Bermel will bring the same lineup from the team's previous event, featuring senior
Gunnar Broin, juniors
Will King and
Luke Honner, and sophomores
Noah Holtzman and
Max Jelinek. This group has started seven of Kansas' nine events this season.
Broin enters the Cowboy Classic fresh off his first career collegiate victory at the Johnnie-O at Sea Island, where he fired a final-round 64, the third-lowest round in program history. Currently ranked 59th in the latest Scoreboard rankings, he looks to lead the Jayhawks once again at Southern Dunes.Â
King also had a strong showing at Sea Island, finishing 38th with a four-over-par total. Kansas has counted 93.7% of his scores this season, and with eight rounds under par, he aims to build on his success. King has eight rounds under par this season.
Jelinek is coming off a top-50 finish at the Johnnie-O at Sea Island, where he shot 72 and 73 to finish five over par. This season, he has recorded five rounds under par and three at even par, with 17 of his 23 rounds contributing to Kansas' team score.
Honner has been one of the hottest Jayhawks this spring, posting back-to-back top-12 finishes to start the season at The Prestige and Desert Mountain. Like Jelinek, he finished five over par in his last tournament but holds an impressive 71.00 scoring average in the spring season.
Holtzman's spring season was highlighted by a final-round 67 on his birthday, which helped Kansas secure a top-five finish at Desert Mountain. He has recorded six rounds under par this season, with 17 of his 23 scores contributing to the team total.
Kansas will tee off alongside host Wyoming at 9:30 a.m. CT on Monday, March 31, in a shotgun start format. The tournament will feature 36 holes on Monday, followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
