LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas volleyball program held a signing ceremony Wednesday as the Jayhawks welcome eight-year-old Serenity Courtney through Team IMPACT.
"We are excited to announce the addition of Serenity Courtney to the Kansas volleyball team's class of 2025," KU first-year head coach Matt Ulmer said. "Serenity has many qualities that we look for when recruiting elite student-athletes in that she is a great competitor that doesn't back down from any challenge that life throws her way, and she is an excellent teammate. The Jayhawks' culture grows stronger today by adding this amazing young woman and her family."
Courtney was born prematurely at 25 weeks, weighing one pound, seven ounces. She was born with two grade 4 brain bleeds and hydrocephalus. Courtney has cerebral palsy, feeding difficulties resulting in a feeding tube, and cortical visual impairment. At the time of her birth, her family was told she would never crawl, walk or talk, let alone sign to join Kansas volleyball.
Courtney lives in Gardner, Kansas, with her parents, Keven and Trisha, and siblings Drake, Giovani and Ravyn. Her brother Drake signed with the Kansas baseball program in January through Team IMPACT.
Volleyball is one of seven programs at KU that partners with Team IMPACT, a group that includes baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, football, softball and swim & dive.
