TEMPE, Ariz. - In a commanding display of pitching and offense, the Kansas Jayhawks secured an 8-0 run-rule victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils on April 5, 2025, evening the series at 1-1.
Making her fifth start of the season, Olivia Bruno pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits and striking out five. Her dominance kept the Sun Devils' offense at bay, marking Kansas' fifth shutout of the season.
"I think it started with Bruno and her presence in the circle today. I'm really proud of her compete factor. She hadn't been able to throw for a couple of weeks, but she did a fantastic job keeping their hitters off balance and guessing, without getting too high or too low in any situation—she set the tone for us," head coach Jennifer McFalls said. "Offensively, we had a different mindset today, more locked in and hunting pitches instead of letting the pitchers control what we were looking for. Tomorrow's a big day, and we just have to come back with the same mentality and fight."
Kansas threatened early in the second inning as junior Anna Soles put a tough infield ball in play. Ava Wallace advanced September Flanagan to second, and a wild pitch moved her to third. However, Natalie Marshall's flyout to left ended the inning scoreless.
The Jayhawks broke the tie in the top of the third when Bruno's hard-hit single drove in a run, putting Kansas up 1-0. The Jayhawks' defense held ASU scoreless through the third inning, keeping the lead intact heading into the fourth.
Kansas came alive in the fifth inning, breaking the game open with an offensive surge. Presley Limbaugh and Anyslee Linduff set the tone with back-to-back singles up the middle. Limbaugh then crossed the plate on a wild pitch, extending the lead to 2-0.
The momentum continued as Soles crushed a three-run homer to center, pushing the score to 5-0. Flanagan wasted no time adding to the fireworks, launching a solo shot of her own to make it 6-0. Kansas wasn't done yet—Emma Tatum capped off the explosive inning with an RBI double, giving the Jayhawks a commanding 7-0 lead heading into the sixth.
Kansas tacked on another run in the sixth inning, stretching its advantage to 8-0 and giving Arizona State one last chance to extend the game.
Bruno and the Jayhawks' defense held firm, securing the run-rule victory and tying the series at 1-1.
