LAWRENCE, Kan. – After a season-opening stretch of four-consecutive five-set battles, No. 15 Kansas volleyball travels to West Lafayette, Indiana, this week to compete in the Purdue Tournament at Halloway Gymnasium Sept. 3–5.
The Jayhawks will face Bowling Green on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 2 p.m. CT. The following day, Sept. 4, KU will have an afternoon bout against No.23 Georgia Tech. Kansas' trip to West Lafayette wraps up on Friday, Sept. 5, at 6 p.m. CT with a challenging road match against Big Ten powerhouse No.17 Purdue.
"We've faced some of the nation's best teams right out of the gate," said Kansas first-year head coach
Matt Ulmer. "It's tested our resilience. This week at Purdue is a chance to build confidence, refine our rotations, and show the kind of team we can be as we move into Big 12 play."
Kansas enters the tournament with a 1-3 record, opening with a thrilling five-set win over Vanderbilt and a narrow five-set loss to reigning national champion Penn State at the AVCA First Serve Tournament. That was followed by heart-wrenching five-set defeats at No. 8 Wisconsin and versus No. 12 Creighton at the Opening Spike Classic in Madison, Wisconsin.
Despite the losses, Kansas continues to receive balanced production across its lineup.
Reese Ptacek and
Jovana Zelenovic remain steady threats up front. Ptacek leads the team with 24 blocks through four matches, while Zelenovic contributes 52 kills and 22 blocks, just two shy of Ptacek, tying them as the team's top defensive presence. Libero
Ryan White anchors the KU defense with 68 total digs, including more than 15 digs in three of KU's four matches.
Furthermore,
Selena Leban ranks in the top five across all offensive and defensive categories for Kansas. She also ties with
Grace Nelson for team-leading service aces, with both contributing five so far this season. The offense has been able to stay in rhythm thanks to setters
Cristin Cline (7.80 assists per set) and
Katie Dalton (5.40 assists per set).
In Sunday's five-set loss to Creighton, Zelenovic posted 16 kills, while Leban added 10 kills and seven digs. Cline powered the offense with 33 assists and seven digs, and defensively, White and Nelson combined for 29 digs.
Aurora Papac contributed five blocks to help anchor the Jayhawks' frontline.
