LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas women's tennis team started off the spring season strong by picking up dominant 5-0 sweeps over both Kansas City and Creighton on Friday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
With the wins, Kansas starts the season 2-0 for the second straight year.
"It's always good to start the season 2-0, and two shutouts," Kansas head coach Todd Chapman said. "We played a lot of tennis today. It was a long day, and you need these days early in the season to get in shape. There's a lot of things I think we can work on and get better at in certain areas, but all in all, I thought it was a positive start to the season."
Kansas opened the day by playing Kansas City in its first dual match of the season. The Jayhawks jumped out early by claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and three.
On court three, the duo of Meg McCarty and Kinley VanPelt took advantage of a hot start by claiming a 6-1 win. The Jayhawks claimed the doubles point as Kyoka Kubo and Heike Janse van Vuuren jumped out to a 6-1 victory over Kansas City. The match on court two, featuring KU's Yerkezhan Arystanbekova and Anna Putilina went unfinished at 2-3.
Putilina was first to get the Jayhawks on the board in singles play as she completed a straight-set win over Kansas City's Sophie Marshman, 6-1, 6-1 to give Kansas a 2-0 advantage. Kansas continued its momentum with another victory on court two as van Vuuren defeated Kansas City's Gati, 6-3, 6-1.
Kubo then clinched the match on court one with a decisive 6-0, 6-3 win over Chrobak on court one, with McCarty taking a 6-1, 6-3 win on court four to wrap up the match. The doubles victory and four singles wins gave Kansas its first win of the season, 5-0.
Later in the afternoon, Kansas faced off against Creighton for the second match of the day. The Jayhawks continued their winning ways by securing the doubles point against the Bluejays to give Kansas an early 1-0 lead. On court one, Kubo and van Vuuren picked up their second win of the day with a swift 6-1 win over Sophie Schwartz and Ana Paula Martinez. KU grabbed the doubles point with a win on court three, as McCarty and VanPelt battled to a 6-3 win against Teresa Tran and Mithila Dixit.
Kubo picked up the first singles win for Kansas on court one, as she defeated Creighton's Schwartz in a quick 6-0, 6-2 match. McCarty picked up another straight-set win on court four, defeating Tran 6-2, 6-3 to give KU a 3-0 advantage.
The Jayhawks took the match on court two, as van Vuuren defeated Martinez in a 6-3, 6-4 battle before Arystanbekova grabbed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dixit to give Kansas a 5-0 win and also moving the Jayhawks to 2-0 on the season.
