Fayetteville, Ark. - Kansas track & field set four new school records over the weekend in the men's mile, women's mile and women's 800 meters at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational and the Tyson Invitational. Kansas athletes also set 19 personal bests over the weekend, won two events and achieved seven podium finishes.
The Jayhawks traveled to four meets on Friday and Saturday, competing amongst some of the best athletes in the world at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational, the Tyson Invitational, the Crimson Open and the Ichabod Invite.
"I think it was a great opportunity to compete against elite competition and was eye opening for us to see where we could improve and how we measure up against everyone." Kansas head coach Stanley Redwine said about the weekend. "The Big 12 is filled with competitors as good, or better, than we faced this weekend and so it was great to see how we can improve and where we are at as we start to wind down the season and prepare for the conference meet."
BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational and Crimson Open
Kansas distance runners had a strong showing at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational, breaking three school records and setting 10 personal bests in 11 races.
On Friday, Quenton Walion and Ryo Higuchi competed in the men's mile in separate heats, with Walion running first. Walion would go on to break Jim Ryun's 3:57.5 Kansas record time by nearly a full second, crossing the finish line in 3:56.77. Then, about five minutes later, Higuchi broke Walion's record by a tenth of a second, finishing in 3:56.67.
The duo finished first and third in the event, with Walion setting a three second personal best and Higuchi breaking the four minute mark for the first time in his collegiate career. Higuchi now owns two Kansas school records in the men's indoor mile and the men's indoor 1,000 meters.
On Saturday, Emmah Jemutai broke her own mile record by two seconds, finishing in 4:34.25. The record setting performance occurred in the women's mile invite, where she placed 16th against some of the top runners in the country. The record is the third Kansas record Jemutai has set, also holding the women's 800 meters and 1,500 meters best marks.Â
"I thought our runners were spectacular in Boston. Quenton breaking the record was great, even though he only had it for five minutes he still had it, and I was happy for him," Redwine said. "Ryo then following up that performance with his own record setting run was very impressive, and Emmah just does what she does best and it was great to see her shine against top competition. For all of our athletes, I was pleased with how many personal bests we achieved and thought we showed a lot of growth."
The Jayhawks picked up another podium placement on Saturday when Stephen Maroro finished third in the men's mile at the Crimson Open at Harvard University.

Tyson Invitational
Kansas measured up well in Arkansas at the Tyson Invitational, setting three personal bests, finishing twice on the podium and setting one new school record.Â
"I thought competing against such a high competition level was really beneficial for us," Redwine said when describing the meet. "I was obviously very happy and proud of Aaliyah [Moore] breaking another school record, but I thought as a whole it was great to see the level of competition we are going to need to go up against as we prepare for the Big 12 meet."
The Jayhawks' performances were highlighted by Aaliyah Moore breaking her second Kansas record of the year in the women's indoor 800 meter run. Moore competed in the 800 meter invite, taking on three professionals and top collegiate competition. Moore was the second collegiate finisher in 2:03.31.
On the field, Kierson Wicks set a personal best in the men's high jump to place third, clearing 2.16 meters (7-1 ft.) while Anthony Meacham finished fourth in the men's pole vault invite with a clearance of 5.55 meters (18-2.5 ft.).
Dean McCune, Ian Kipkogei, Parker Walion and Lenny Njoroge all also set personal bests in the 60 meter dash, 800 meters, mile run and 3,000 meters, respectively.
