LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas softball looks to build momentum this weekend at the Woo Pig Classic from Feb. 27 to March 1. The Jayhawks will face Omaha, Boise State and Charlotte before closing the tournament against Arkansas as they continue their nonconference slate.
Kansas (10-6) enters the weekend looking to build consistency after splitting its final day at the Joan Joyce Classic in Boca Raton, Florida. The Jayhawks responded from an 8-0 run-rule loss to UMass with a 4-1 victory over Villanova, using timely hitting and a complete-game performance in the circle from Kaelee Washington.
"It's about putting together a complete weekend," head coach Jennifer McFalls said. "We've shown what we're capable of when we stay disciplined and trust each other. This group continues to grow, and this is another opportunity to sharpen who we are before conference play."
Against Villanova, Kansas bounced back quickly after falling behind 1-0, tying the game on an RBI triple from Emma Tatum before taking the lead on Hailey Cripe's RBI double in the fifth. Kadence Stafford added insurance with a two-run home run in the sixth, while Washington allowed just three hits and struck out six in a complete-game effort.
The Jayhawks have shown the ability to produce offensively in stretches this season, highlighted by multiple run-rule wins and late-inning surges, including a four-run seventh inning against South Florida earlier this month. Speed at the top of the lineup and timely extra-base hits have helped Kansas create separation when executing cleanly.
In the circle, Kansas continues to rely on a balanced staff led by Washington and Chloe Barber, with the bullpen providing key innings throughout tournament play.
The Jayhawks continue to fine-tune their approach as they move deeper into the nonconference portion of the schedule with Big 12 play on the horizon.
