SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Jayhawks will kick off their 2026 spring season on the Otay Reservoir at the University of California, San Diego, competing against the Tritons in the Chula Vista Elite preseason scrimmage beginning March 1 at 9 a.m. CT.
"I am excited to watch how the team rolls into this preseason opportunity," Andrew Derrick said, entering his first spring season as Kansas rowing head coach. "We have made great progress over the last several days and months, and I know we have the ability to show up and compete at a high level. The goal here is to prove we have retained the progress demonstrated at practice and execute well on race day, which is exactly what these early-season opportunities are for. Hopefully, we show up ready to go and start the season at a high level in a way we can build on over the coming months."
Prior to the scrimmage, the team spent four days (Feb. 25-28) training in Chula Vista, California, at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center. This marks the second time this season the Jayhawks have trained at the specialized facility.
On Feb. 9, junior Tya Drennan and freshman Claire Van Mater were announced as finalists on the For Stars Network Watchlist for women's rowers and coxswains.
The Jayhawks enter the spring campaign after competing in two regattas during the fall 2025 season. Kansas rowing competed at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, earning a first-place finish in the Women's Club Fours race for the third consecutive year.
Additionally, the Jayhawks hosted Kansas State, Creighton and Tulsa at the boathouse for the Head of the Kansas scrimmage to close out their 2025 schedule.
