AZUSA, Calif. - Four Kansas multi-event athletes competed Thursday and Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational, with
Conor Dunback winning the men's Group B heptathlon, setting the 11th best national mark this season.
Dunback won the B group in the men's heptathlon with 7,363 points, becoming the seventh best performer in Kansas history. On his way to the victory, Dunback set personal bests in the long jump, shot put, 400 meters, 110 meter hurdles, and tied his best in the high jump.Â
Freshman Katie Wink placed 10th in the D group heptathlon with 4,556 points in her first-ever collegiate heptathlon, while Reese Hulcher finished 13th in the C group with 4,501 points in hers. Oliver Duffy also competed in the decathlon C group, but did not finish.Â
Wink got the Jayhawks started Thursday in the D group of the heptathlon, opening with a second-place finish in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 14.69 seconds, earning 883 points. She then finished sixth in the high jump, 15th in the shot put and sixth in the 200-meter dash to close Thursday with a total of 2,821 points, good enough for seventh in her group.Â
In the B group of the heptathlon, Hulcher began with a 15.50 seconds time in the 100 meter hurdles before winning the high jump with a clearance of 1.71 meters. She then finished 12th in the shot put and 13th in the 200-meter dash to end day one with a total of 2,824 points, sitting in 12th among collegiate competitors in her group.Â
Duffy opened his first multi of the outdoor season with back-to-back victories, scoring a personal best 100 meter dash and performing at 7.22 meters in long jump to finish seventh. After that, he set another personal best of 1.98 meters to win the high jump and closed the first day with a fourth-place finish in the 400 meters to sit in first place in his group with 3,981 points.
Dunback began his multi event with seventh in the 100-meter dash, and followed that with a fourth-place personal best 7.08 meters long jump, and second-place personal best shot put. He then tied his personal best in the high jump with a clearance of 1.83 meters before winning the 400 meter run with another personal best time of 49.23 seconds to position himself in fourth at the end of Thursday with 3,868 points.
On Friday, Wink finished fourth in the long jump to open the day, before finishing 12th and 15th in the javelin throw and 800 meter run, respectively. She ended with a personal best 4,556 points to take tenth in the heptathlon D group. Hulcher placed 13th in both the long jump and javelin throw, before achieving 6th in the 800 meters to finish with 4,501 points and 13th in the B group.
Duffy began with a seventh-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles before setting a personal best in the discus throw to finish fourth with a top mark of 40.27 meters. He recorded no height in the pole vault and did not start in the javelin throw or 1,500 meter run to finish with 5,368 points through eight completed events.
Dunback came out strong again on Friday, placing fourth with another personal best in the 110-meter hurdles. He then finished fifth in the discus throw and third in the pole vault, before a second place finish in the javelin throw. Sitting in third place entering the final event, the 1,500-meter run, Dunback finished in 4:37.33 to place second in the event and vault himself into first place overall, winning by 22 points.Â
His personal best performance moved him up one spot in the all time performers list to seventh, and set the 11th best mark nationally this season. Full results are available here, while Kansas only results can be found
