AZUSA, Calif. - Kansas track and field traveled to California to compete in the Bryan Clay Invitational this weekend. The weekend was highlighted by
Emmah Jemutai and
Mason Meinershagen, who broke their own school records, while the team won six events, and set 16 personal bests.Â
"We had some really good performances and several outstanding ones," Kansas head coach
Stanley Redwine said about the meet. "Emmah ran an outstanding 800 and a very solid 1500, while Mason continued her outstanding competition by vaulting 15 feet. Bryce and Anthony were also outstanding in the vault on the men's side... Overall the team is improving each week, athletes in every event are improving. To be successful moving forward we will need a total team effort from everyone and will need to up our expectations and step up to the challenge."Â
Jemutai broke her own KU record in the women's 800 meters on Friday night when she finished in 1:59.88. She became just the 16th collegiate woman athlete to ever have a sub two minute outdoors time and set the fourth best national mark this season while winning the event.
Mason Meinershagen also had a record setting day in the pole vault on Saturday, clearing a new personal best 4.57 meters and breaking her own school record. Her jump was the third highest mark in the country this season and made her the first female ever to clear 15 feet in the pole vault and 6 feet in the high jump in NCAA history. It marked the second time she had broken her own outdoor record, and the fifth time overall between the indoor and outdoor seasons.Â
Things got started on the track Thursday with the 3,000 meter steeplechases and the 10,000 meter runs. Lenny Njoroge set a personal best time of 30:32.64 in the 10K, while Mia Murray and Sawyer Schmidt set personal bests in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Murray's time of 10:43.73 made her the ninth best performer in KU history.
In the field, Kat Meacham finished eighth in the women's hammer throw with a personal best 52.79 meters throw, making her the eighth best performer in KU history.Â
On the track, Stephen Maroro finished sixth in the second heat of the men's 5,000 invitational with a personal best time of 13:36.91. The time was the fourth fastest in KU history and made him the third best competitor in the event among all Jayhawks. Barnabas Ndiwa also finished in a personal best time of 13:50.10 in the third heat of the 5,000 meters. His time was good for tenth fastest in KU history and slotted him fifth among performers.
Michael Joseph picked up the first podium placement for Kansas on Saturday with his second place finish in the men's 400 meters. Sidney Smith followed him up by winning the women's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 58.79 seconds.Â
The Jayhawks' pole vaulters competed at the Beach Invitational in both the men's and women's invitational sections. In addition to Meinershagen's record setting win, Bryce Barkdull set a new personal best with his 5.70 meter clearance to win the men's section. Anthony Meacham also cleared 5.70 meters but finished second due to Barkdull clearing 5.60 meters while Meacham passed. Barkdull's clearance tied him for the third highest clearance in the nation.
Brenna Schwada won the women's long jump open with a personal best 5.90 meters jump, while Richelle Stanley finished fifth in the invitational section with a personal best 6.17 meters jump. Sofia Sluchaninova also recorded the first mark of her season to finish second in the women's discus with a 52.67 meters distance.Â
The Kansas 1,500 meter runners wrapped up the meet. Jemutai finished ninth in the women's elite section, in 4:10.20, running the second fastest time in KU history behind only herself. Tanner Talley finished 13th in the men's elite section and Hobbs Campbell set a new personal best time to place 47th in the invitational. Parker Walion closed the meet for Kansas with a win in the men's Open A section, finishing in a personal best 3:41.56, making him the seventh best performer in Kansas history.Â
