ORLANDO, Fla. – Kansas softball won its 30th game of the season and took the series finale against UCF, 4-2, on Sunday at the UCF Softball Complex in Orlando.
Lila Partridge dominated in the circle, throwing a complete game on 10 hits, 2 strikeouts and giving up only two runs. Hailey Cripe led the offense with a three-run home run in the third inning, her 14th of the season.
Kansas improved to 30-15 (11-7 Big 12), while UCF fell to 35-12-1 (12-8-1 Big 12). The win marks the first 30-win season for Kansas softball since 2016 (31-20).
"I was really proud of our response today. I thought Lila competed extremely well in the circle and didn't give up a walk the entire game," head coach Jennifer McFalls said. "We got a huge timely hit by Hailey Cripe to put us up 4-0, and we had some big defensive plays to keep UCF from momentum opportunities. We were a lot more disciplined at the plate and drew 8 walks in the game. That was one of our goals we talked about as a team, so I'm really proud of us for sticking to our game plan. It was a great way to end the series as we head home and get ready to host Iowa State next weekend."
How It Happened | vs. UCF
- Both teams were quiet in the first two innings, but Kansas was able to strike first in the top of the third. Campbell Bagshaw got the inning started with a single to left-center field, and was followed by Bailey Amezcua, who reached base on a bunt single that got away from the UCF first baseman, moving Bagshaw from first to third. On an attempt to pick Bagshaw off at third base, the UCF catcher threw the ball into left field, allowing Bagshaw to score. Later in the inning, with runners on first and third, Hailey Cripe launched a three-run home run to left field, extending the Kansas lead to 4-0.Â
- UCF threatened in the bottom of the fourth, getting a runner in scoring position with two outs, but Lila Partridge worked a flyout to right field, ending the inning and keeping the Knights off the board.Â
- In the bottom of the fifth, UCF managed to get runners on first and second with no outs, but Partidge once again worked out of the jam, forcing a pop out on the infield, a fielder's choice and a strikeout, keeping the Knights' offense at bay.Â
- UCF got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as center fielder Samantha Rey hit an RBI infield single with two outs. Partridge went right back to work from there, ending the inning with a lineout hit to a diving Cripe.Â
- In the bottom of the seventh, Partridge stepped back into the circle, attempting to finish the complete game. UCF left fielder Izzy Mertes hit a leadoff double and advanced to third base and scored on back-to-back groundouts, chipping into the Kansas lead. Partridge got the next batter to fly out, giving Kansas a 4-2 win.
