Jayhawks and Cyclones Split Doubleheader

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas and Iowa State softball split a doubleheader Friday at Arrocha Ballpark with the Jayhawks claiming a 12-2 run rule in game one and Iowa State winning the second contest, 4-1.Â
With the split, Kansas is now 31-16 (12-8 in Big 12) and Iowa State is 28-20 (8-12).
"We came out hot in game one, swinging the bats," KU head coach Jennifer McFalls said of the Jayhawks who posted seven hits in the run rule win. "In game two we just let it get away from us. I don't think we were very disciplined at the plate. We were getting ourselves out, chasing pitches out of the zone, and that gave them momentum."
Kansas dominated Iowa State in game one, winning 12-2 in a five-inning run rule. KU scored five runs in the first inning, two in the second, and five in the third.Â
Down 1-0, Kansas scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run double from senior Campbell Bagshaw. In the second inning, junior Anna Soles hit a two-run home run scoring herself and senior Presley Limbaugh who led off the frame with a bunt single. Limbaugh would end the contest 3-for-3 at the plate, scoring three runs with one RBI, while Soles had a 2-for-3 game with three RBI.Â
Kansas concluded the scoring in the bottom of the third inning, scoring five runs. Nine Jayhawks batted in the third with an RBI single by Limbaugh and a two RBI single by senior Hailey Cripe.
In the circle for game one, Jayhawk freshman Lila Partridge picked up her second-straight win, throwing her third complete game of the season to improve to 6-3. Partridge gave up just three hits, while striking out two Cyclones in her five innings of work.
In game two, Iowa State scored one run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth to take 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, KU senior Campbell Bagshaw hit a solo home run over the left center field fence to cut the score to 4-1.Â
"Tomorrow is a new day. It's Senior Day," McFalls said. "It's a big day for us, a big day for our seniors, but more importantly we have to come out and be more focused and be ready to go."
