LAWRENCE, Kan. – Shortstop Matt McLaughlin and closer Stephen Villines found themselves in key roles Tuesday night at Doran Park as the duo helped rally the Falmouth Commodores to force a game three divisional playoff bout against the Bourne Braves in the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL).
The Commodores trailed the Braves, 4-3, when McLaughlin stepped to the plate to lead off the top of the eighth inning. The San Jose, California, native stroked a single to start the frame before stealing second base and moving himself into prime position to tie the game. A single and errant throw later, and McLaughlin found himself touching home and knotting the game up, 4-4.
Falmouth mustered a RBI-single later in the inning to take the lead and that is all they would need as Villines and fellow Commodore reliever Corbin Martin shut the door in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively. The twosome combined for five strikeouts between them and secured a decisive game three Wednesday night, with the winner moving on to face Yarmouth-Dennis for the CCBL Championship.
