LAHAINA, Hawaii – Looking to its experience once again, Kansas men’s golf was led by senior Chase Hanna Friday and is tied for 10th at the end of the first round in the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic at the Royal Ka’anapali Golf Club.
Despite four bogeys on the front nine, Hanna was able to post an eagle on the par-five sixth hole to give himself a chance entering the turn. Hanna played his game on the back, recording one birdie with the rest of the holes even, to end up tied for 20th at one-over-par for the day. Hanna has placed in the top-15 in four out of five events this season.
With two double bogeys on his card, junior Daniel Sutton was able to collect three birdies, including two consecutive on the fifth and sixth holes. Sutton finished the day tied for 50th at three-over-par.
Junior Daniel Hudson recorded another solid round for the Jayhawks, finishing the first day with a three-over-par, 74. With three bogeys on the front, Hudson was able to collect a birdie on the 10th, matched by a bogey on the 17th. Hudson ended the first round tied for 50th.
Running into struggles on the front nine with a pair of double-bogeys, sophomore Charlie Hillier was able to respond with three birdies on the back without a single bogey. Hillier finished the first round with a four-over-par, 75, and is tied for 68th.
Competing in his third-straight event as a Jayhawk, Idaho transfer sophomore Jake Scarrow recorded a five-over-par, 76, for the day. Despite two birdies, too many bogeys put Scarrow tied for 75th.
“We just didn’t play very well today,” head coach Jamie Bermel said. “Very windy, but we made some sloppy mistakes. If we can clean that up and play the par-fives better, I think we can do much better. Chase was solid, but the rest of the guys were fairly average.”
Playing as an individual, freshman Andy Spencer started strong with a birdie on the first hole to find himself tied for 22nd at one-over-par for the first day. This is just the third event of Spencer’s career as a Jayhawk.
Kansas finished tied for 10th in the prestigious 24-team field, 13 strokes behind the leader, South Carolina. The Jayhawks also sit only five strokes behind fellow Big-12 competitor and No. 7 Oklahoma.
