LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 8 Kansas Jayhawks knocked off the Texas Tech Red Raiders in a 3-1 victory on Wednesday night in the United Supermarkets Arena.Â
In the Jayhawks' victory,
Caroline Bien surpassed 1,000 career digs, marking her second career milestone on the season, as she recently eclipsed 800 career kills as well.Â
Kansas made a quick statement to open the match, running up the score 3-0 before the Red Raiders could get on the scoreboard. With the Jayhawks up 8-2, Texas Tech's first timeout was utilized early. Kansas remained unfazed, however, holding Tech down to single digits all the way through 18-9. The home side would only score four more points from there, with Kansas hitting .323 to take the set 25-13.
Ayah Elnady racked up an impressive seven kills in the first set alone to lead the Jayhawks, while
Camryn Turner kept things moving with 11 assists.Â
The home side got out to a much better start in the second, pulling away from the Jayhawks with a 7-3 lead at one point. Kansas came back to tie it 7-7 with no problem, however, showing a much cleaner offense. A
Heidi Devers ace would give Kansas the lead once again, but Tech answered with a kill to make it 8-8. Some more back and forth play would eventually result in a 13-10 lead by Tech, which triggered Kansas' first timeout of the match. TTU continued their run, pushing a second Jayhawk timeout up 18-14.Â
Kansas went down 22-17 shortly after, but a 3-0
Raegan Burns serving run that included an ace got the Jayhawks closer at 22-20, to which Tech answered with a timeout. Three consecutive points by Tech would give them the second set victory in a 25-20 fashion.Â
Tech kept their offensive dominance rolling in the third, holding Kansas at arm's length with a newfound confidence. Defensively, KU struggled a bit, as well as hit into the Texas Tech block multiple times throughout the set. Down 18-14, Kansas tried their second timeout in an attempt to flip the script, but they'd continue an uphill battle, closing it up at 20-19. Tech notched the next two points, however, but
London Davis kept KU in it with a huge kill for 22-20.Â
23-21 came next, but an ace from Elnady in the clutch saw Kansas down one, and Bien would get a kill right after to finally tie things at 23-23. A Tech timeout led to them going up 24-23, but 24-24 would come after.
Reese Ptacek would deliver the block of the match with Turner by her side, and with the Jayhawks up 25-24, TTU called their second timeout. It was to no avail, however, as Kansas gutted out the extra points to take the 27-25 victory.Â
Set four started in a similar fashion with the home side out front, and Kansas used their first timeout down 11-7. It helped slow the Red Raider momentum, and KU would clean things up to tie it 12-12. There would be more back and forth play before Kansas was able to push Texas Tech to take a timeout as the Jayhawks found a narrow 19-18 lead. From there, Kansas took things to set point with ease, and although Tech would notch one more point, Kansas took the match in a 25-20 final set victory.Â
