KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Kansas soccer team was slotted at No. 23 when the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) released its 2015 preseason rankings Monday afternoon. The announcement marked the first time since 2005 the Jayhawks will enter the regular season among the top-25 ranked teams in the nation.
The Jayhawks were one of five Big 12 teams to either be ranked or receiving votes in the preseason poll. Defending league champion West Virginia sits at No. 12, while Texas Tech was placed at 15th.
Kansas returns seven of 11 starters from a 2014 campaign which saw the Jayhawks tally 15 wins, the third-most in program history, and make the school’s sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The team’s top goal scorers from last season are also set to return in seniors Liana Salazar (13 goals) and Ashley Williams (seven goals).
The Jayhawks begin preseason practice Wednesday, Aug. 5 before playing a pair of exhibitions against Drake (Aug. 12) and North Dakota State (Aug. 16), both at Rock Chalk Park. Kansas will kick off the regular season at Nebraska on Aug. 21.
