IRVING, Texas – Kansas Rowing junior Laura Teska has been named the Big 12 Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Teska becomes the second Kansas rower to be named the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining Liz Scherer, who received the honor in 2013. The award winners are selected based on the votes of each sport's respective head coaches.
"Laura has been an asset to our team since she arrived," Kansas head coach Carrie Cook-Callen said. "She has put herself in our program's top boats and on the top 10 all-time record boards while continuing to hold the highest academic standards. Laura is a competitor both in the classroom and in the boat. We are so proud of her for earning the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year award."
Teska recently concluded her third year as a member of the Kansas Rowing program. She has competed in the Varsity 8 and 2 Varsity 8 boats during her three years as a Jayhawk. A hometown native of Lawrence, Teska is a University of Kansas legacy, with both of her parents attending KU, while her grandfather was a professor at the school.
Through three years at Kansas, Teska holds a 3.99 grade point average, while majoring in Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology. Her future plans include pursuing a Doctorate of Optometry. She is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and a two-time CRCA Scholar-Athlete honoree.
