LAWRENCE, Kan. – Head coach Carrie Cook-Callen announced the promotion of Dan Duxbury to associate head coach of the Kansas Women's Rowing program on Friday.
"It is with great pleasure to publicly announce the elevation of Dan into the Associate Head Coach position here at Kansas," Cook-Callen said. "We have had the opportunity to really look at the program, its current needs and align Dan's skill set to fit a role that will benefit the program and its continued pursuit of success." Â
Duxbury arrived in Lawrence in 2021 and spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach for the Jayhawks. In his role, he primarily led the 1 Varsity 4 and 2 Varsity 4 boats and helped the 1 Varsity 4 to a third-place finish at the 2023 Big 12 Championship.Â
Duxbury has coached back-to-back Big 12 Newcomers of the Year, with Melia Martin earning the honor in 2022, followed by Katia Ustiuzhanina in 2023. Ustiuzhanina also garnered national recognition that same year, receiving an All-America Honorable Mention from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association
Last season hailed more team and individual accolades. The 1st Varsity 8 earned Big 12 Boat of the Week honors on May 8, while Emma Wistuba was named to the All-Big 12 First Team. Laura Teska also made history, becoming only the second Kansas rower to be named Big 12 Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, highlighting the program's commitment to excellence both in competition and academics.
Before coming to Kansas, Duxbury was the lead assistant women's rowing coach and recruiting coordinator for San Diego State University from 2013 to 2016 and again from 2018 to 2021. While with the Aztecs, he helped revamp the program from 82nd (out of 88 teams) to a best rank of 36th.Â
During his two-year gap from SDSU, Duxbury completed his master's degree from Northeastern University and also served as the associate head coach at the Rio Salado Rowing Club and a camp coach at Chinook Performance Racing.
"I want to express my sincere gratitude to Coach Cook-Callen and Director of Athletics Travis Goff for their faith in me," Duxbury said. "It has been a privilege to be part of this incredible department for the past three seasons, working with a staff that is second to none. I consider myself very fortunate to work with the exceptional student-athletes that only a place as special and unique as the University of Kansas attracts. I am excited about the coming season as we continue to elevate this program to the top of the Big 12."
Kansas Women's Rowing hosts two home fall events on September 27 and November 2 at Burcham Park and will be free to all those interested in attending.
