BOULDER, Colo. – The No. 16-ranked Colorado Buffaloes defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field. A goal by Jace Holley in the 81st minute was the difference in the match.
Â
"Two teams on a hot Sunday that really worked hard, battled and fought," head coach Nate Lie said. "It could have gone either way. I'm proud of our players. I thought they put in a good shift. It's not easy coming up to this altitude. They did most of the things right. What I just told them after the game is when we face moments of adversity, when we get tired, too many times we become either defeatist or forget what got us here in the first place. We lose our identity, lose our attention to detail."
Lie continued, "That's a little bit what happened. I don't think they created a clean chance from open play the entire game, which is a credit to us for 90 minutes. They were able to generate a lot of set pieces, some from unnecessary fouls on our part, some from winning throw ins and they have a long throw, which is how they ended up scoring. I'm getting frustrated about these road games where we do enough to get points and then we find ways to give them away."
There was a lot of back-and-forth action in the first half, but neither team was able to convert on its chances. Kansas and Colorado were tied 0-0 at the half. The Buffaloes held a 6-4 edge on shots.
Â
In the 53rd minute, Kansas had its best opportunity of the day. Sophomore
Caroline Castans sent a through ball to redshirt sophomore
Saige Wimes who received the ball in stride running to the goal. Wimes took a shot on frame that was saved by the Colorado goalkeeper and had another opportunity on the rebound, but her header was also saved.
Â
Colorado would break through for the only goal of the match in the 81st minute. A throw in was sent into the box and bounced around between five players before Holley was able to get just enough of the ball with her right foot and direct it towards the corner of the net.
Â
The Buffaloes had a 12-7 edge on shots in the match, including 4-3 in shots on goal. Wimes had all three shots on goal for Kansas.
Â
Colorado stretched its unbeaten streak to 10 consecutive matches, improving to 10-1-1 on the season and 4-0-1 in conference play. Kansas dropped to 5-4-3 on the year and 2-3-0 in Big 12 competition.
