LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Oklahoma State Cowgirls defeated the Kansas Jayhawks 3-0 on Saturday night at Rock Chalk Park.
Â
"Congrats to Oklahoma State on this game," head coach Nate Lie said. "They outplayed us. They deserved the victory and they're a very good team. I'm surprised and a little bit shocked at how poorly we played at the beginning of the game. We came out really flat. We were up against the wind which definitely had a little bit of a factor, but that caused us to lose all the principles and our identity. We played on the back foot and when you play on your back foot for any kind of extended period of time you're probably going to get punished."
Â
Lie continued, "At halftime down 3-0, we had a decision to make. We had to decide if we were going to feel sorry for ourselves and try to survive the last 45 minutes and hope it doesn't get worse or if we're going to come battle and fight and show what we're about. I think we certainly could have played better in the second half, but I'm proud that we played that half on the front foot. We never gave up and played to the final whistle."
Â
Oklahoma State controlled the first half on Saturday night. The Cowgirls scored three first half goals to build a 3-0 lead at halftime. Logan Heausler, Gracie Bindbeutel and Laudan Wilson were the goal scorers for Oklahoma State.
Â
Heausler's goal in the 15th minute came on a pass into the box from Katelyn Hoppers. Heausler took the pass and put it into the back left corner of the net. Bindbeutel scored less than four minutes later in the 19th minute. Alex Morris made a pass from the top of the box to Bindbeutel at the penalty spot and she snuck it past redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Sophie Dawe. The third goal of the half came in the 32nd minute on a penalty kick by Wilson.
Â
After not registering a shot in the first half, Kansas held a 5-1 advantage on shots in the second half. Oklahoma State outshout Kansas 8-5 for the game, including 5-2 in shots on target. The Jayhawks did hold a 4-2 edge on corner kicks.
Â
Oklahoma State recorded its 11th shutout of the season to improve to 9-2-3 on the season and 2-2-2 in conference play, while Kansas dropped to 5-5-3 and 2-4-0 in league play.
