PROVO, Utah – Kansas soccer jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first half and held on to pick up a 3-1 win over BYU at South Field on Thursday evening.
Saige Wimes,
Jillian Gregorski, and
Lexi Watts each scored a goal in the victory.
Kansas improved to 11-3-3 (5-3-1 in Big 12 play) on the season and the Jayhawks are now 5-1-1 on the road. BYU fell to 8-5-3 on the year (3-4-2 in Big 12 play). Kansas has won back-to-back Big 12 games for the first time this season.
"I'm very proud of this team," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "This was a huge win for a lot of different reasons. This felt like a postseason match. We played a great opponent, BYU is excellent. They're super talented, and they put a lot of pressure on us in a lot of different ways."
Lie continued, "We were able to get off to a flying start. We like to pride ourselves on playing at a different tempo than most teams. We were able to translate that into goals and punish BYU by going up 3-0 before they had their legs underneath them. I thought we did a good job in the rest of the first half of staying in control and staying on the front foot. We knew it was going to be a challenge to stay in control of the match. We knew they were going to make adjustments."
"These are the moments that test character, the moments that test culture, and thankfully multiple players on our team stepped up in those moments and delivered performances that we haven't seen this year. We went deeper on the bench in certain areas than we have to give us that shift that we need, and I think the team embraced that mentality, and I'm glad that we were able to see that result."
The Jayhawks struck first in the eighth minute of the match. Kansas drew a corner kick, where Caroline Castans kicked the ball short to Livvy Moore, who crossed the ball into the box, where Wimes redirected the ball into the net to take an early 1-0 lead.
In the 13th minute, Kate Langfelder took a throw-in and advanced the ball to Gregorski, who dribbled the ball past a defender and took a strike towards the right post. The ball ricocheted off the post and into the goal to give Kansas a 2-0 lead.
KU had another opportunity in the first half, as Wimes crossed the ball to the right side of the box to Langfelder. She then passed the ball into the middle of the field where Gregorski headed the ball towards the goal but hit the crossbar. The ball deflected off the bar right to Watts, who tapped the ball into an empty net to give the Jayhawks a 3-0 lead going into the half.
BYU responded with a goal of their own in the 55th minute, as Ellie Walbruch took a pass from Afton Perry to cut into the KU lead at 3-1.
The Cougars were able to outshoot the Jayhawks in the second half as they tried to tie the game, but the Kansas defense was able to hold off any further opportunities to close out the win. Sophie Dawe recorded five saves, which tied her season high.
