FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 7 seed Kansas will face off against the No. 2 seed West Virginia Mountaineers in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Tournament on Monday, Nov. 3 at Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas. The match is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Kansas drew the No. 7 seed after finishing the regular season with a 12-4-3 (6-4-1 in Big 12) record. The Jayhawks lost a close 2-1 match against No. 11 Colorado on Thursday evening to close out the regular season. Jillian Gregorski scored her eighth goal of the season in the loss.
"Our goal as a team is to be a force in the postseason, but we have to take it game-by-game, and West Virginia is one of the toughest teams in the conference," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "Every game we've played against them the past two seasons has been close, and I'd expect tomorrow to be the same. At this point in the year, it's all about playing with urgency and desperation, and hopefully we'll come out with a winning mindset."
Kansas returned to the TopDrawerSoccer poll on Oct. 28, sitting at No. 24. The Jayhawks are also receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The Jayhawks' highest ranking this season was on Sept. 23, when Kansas was ranked No. 14 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and No. 9 in the TopDrawerSoccer poll. The Jayhawks are also currently ranked 14th in RPI.
Kansas is second in the Big 12 in goals scored this year with 39, and is 20th in the country in corner kicks per game, averaging 6.68 corner kicks per match. Lexi Watts is tied for seventh in the Big 12 and leads Kansas with nine goals and 20 points. Gregorski is ninth in the Big 12 with eight goals. Caroline Castans is tied for ninth in the country and second in the Big 12 in assists this year. Castans leads the Jayhawks with a career-high 10 assists, surpassing her total from last year of six. She is now tied with Monica Dolinsky (2008, 2009) and Caroline Smith (2004) for the third most assists in a single season in program history.
Kansas wrapped up the regular season with a 6-4-1 record in Big 12 play, earning the No. 7 seed in the Big 12 Tournament. As the seventh seed, the Jayhawks are 1-1-2 all-time in tournament history. Last season, Kansas defeated West Virginia 1-0 in double overtime in the quarterfinals before going on an impressive run to capture the Big 12 Tournament title in Kansas City. The championship marked the program's second in history and first since 2019. On their way to the title, the Jayhawks knocked off the tournament's top three seeds—TCU, Texas Tech, and West Virginia. Head coach Nate Lie made history by becoming the first coach to win the Big 12 Tournament in their debut season at the helm. Kansas also placed four players on the All-Tournament Team—all of whom return this year: Caroline Castans, Sophie Dawe, Olivia Page, and Lexi Watts.
