KU Places Fifth, Posts Eight Personal Bests at Hawkeye Invitational

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Kansas swimming and diving wrapped up the Hawkeye Invitational with 928 points and eight personal bests Friday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, finishing fifth overall.
Our midseason invite results are a strong gauge of where we are at this point in the season, head coach Clark Campbell said. Compared to last year, we've definitely improved in many areas, but it also shows where we can continue to get better. We'll use this meet to make adjustments as we move toward the championship season.
In the swimming prelims, finalists in the 200-yard backstroke included junior Bradie Ward (1:59.98), senior Lydia Lafferty (2:01.73), freshman Kelsey Healy (2:02.61), and freshman Madison Wagner (2:02.66).
Advancing to the 100-yard freestyle finals were freshman Sarah Blake (51.33), sophomore Sophie Wallace (51.38), senior Caroline Blake (51.44), and junior Mia Waldron (51.75).
Four Jayhawks moved on in the 200-yard breaststroke: junior Ryan Johnston (2:15.67), senior Molly Robinson (2:18.66), senior Aidan Howze (2:19.97), and sophomore Alayna Henage (2:20.83).
Freshman Sammy Cummins (2:01.01), sophomore Maya Lambert (2:01.20), sophomore Anna Gearhart (2:04.03), and freshman Rebecca Pickert (2:04.90) qualified for the 200-yard butterfly finals.
In the first final of the evening, Ward placed third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:57.47. Lafferty (2:00.50) and Wagner (2:02.62) set personal bests to finish 19th and 29th, respectively. Healy followed in 31st.
Wallace led KU in the 100-yard freestyle finals with a time of 50.80 to place 18th. Sarah Blake finished 24th, Caroline Blake 26th, and Waldron 29th.
Johnston took ninth in the 200-yard breaststroke finals at 2:15.16, with Robinson finishing 16th. Howze placed 20th and Henage 23rd.
Cummins and Lambert recorded top-five finishes in the 200 butterfly finals, with Cummins taking fourth with 2:01.14 and Lambert fifth in a personal-best time of 2:01.25. Gearhart placed 11th with a PR of 2:02.19, followed by Pickert in 19th.
Freshman Ivy Solt logged a lifetime best of 16:39.54 in the 1650-yard freestyle to claim third place.
The Jayhawks closed the meet in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Wallace, Sarah Blake, Caroline Blake, and Solt combined for a 3:22.25 finish to place sixth.
