LINCOLN, Neb. – Kansas swimming and diving put up five event wins and 11 personal bests Friday evening, showing their depth across the lineup before ultimately falling to Nebraska 162–138 at the Devaney Center.
We really attacked each race and competed very well, head coach Clark Campbell said. A few races didn't go our way and we came up short. However, we're right where we need to be going into our mid-season championship meet at Iowa.
The night opened with the 200-yard medley relay, where Nebraska's A squad touched first at 1:39.74. Kansas' A team followed in second at 1:39.87, and the Jayhawks' B relay secured third to give KU some early points.
Kansas' first win came in the 100-yard backstroke, where senior Lydia Lafferty delivered a personal best of 53.19 to take the top spot. Lafferty later reset the school record in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing second at 53.02 to highlight her strong two-event showing.
Junior Ryan Johnston added to the Jayhawks' win total with a 1:01.45 performance in the 100-yard breaststroke. Senior Molly Robinson followed in at third with 1:03.35. Johnston later returned to sweep the breaststroke events, capturing the 200 breast with a time of 2:15.46.
The 200-yard butterfly event belonged to a Kansas trio, all posting personal bests. Freshman Sammy Cummins led the group with a second-place finish at 2:00.02, followed by sophomore Maya Lambert in third clocking in at 2:01.75. Sophomore Anna Gearhart rounded out the group in fifth with 2:02.47. Gearhart and fellow sophomore Lucia Krings later added other personal records in the 100 fly, with Gearhart placing third at 53.62 and Krings in seventh at 59.71.
The Jayhawks carried that momentum into the sprints, where the Blake sisters delivered matching top-three finishes. Senior Caroline Blake placed second in the 50-yard freestyle at 23.40, and freshman Sarah Blake followed in third with a personal best time of 23.44. Sarah added another PR in the 100 free, claiming second with 51.09. Sophomore Mia Waldron also earned a personal best time of 51.49 in the event to finish fourth.
Kansas picked up their final and fifth victory of the dual meet in the distance events as sophomore Gabi Dyer won the 500-yard freestyle with a personal best at 4:49.94.
On the boards, junior Shiyun Lai continued her strong season with a 3-meter dive win, scoring 359.78 points. Senior Lize van Leeuwen finished fourth with 271.80. Lai went on to place second on the 1-meter with 309.38, and van Leeuwen added a third-place finish at 282.90 to complete KU's diving efforts.
