CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Kansas women's tennis fell to South Carolina, 4-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Friday.
The loss ends Kansas' season at 14-12 overall, while South Carolina improves to 15-11 and will take on the winner of North Carolina and VCU in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
Kansas battled in doubles to start off the match and kept it close, but ultimately dropped the doubles point to South Carolina. On court one, No. 31 Gracie Mulville and Heike Janse van Vuuren fell to No. 10 Sarah Hamner and Kaitlyn Carnicella, 6-4. On court two, Jasmine Adams and Yerkezhan Arystanbekova lost to Bella Bergqvist Larsson and Olympe Lancelot in a close 6-4 match.Â
Court three went unfinished, as Kyoka Kubo and Anna Putilina were tied with Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald in a tight 5-5 match.
The Jayhawks kept fighting in singles matches, but the Gamecocks took three quick matches to clinch the win. Court one finished first, as Mulville fell to No. 15 Hamner 6-4, 6-2. On court six, Putilina battled against Buchwald but fell in a two set match, 6-3, 6-4. South Carolina won the match on court two, as No. 47 Carnicella defeated Maria Titova 6-3, 6-4.Â
Kansas led in three other matches before the match went unfinished. On court three, Kubo was leading Lancelot 6-3, 5-5. Adams battled against Larsson in a tight 7-6 (4), 3-3 match before it went unfinished. Court four featured a three set match, as van Vuuren was leading Misa Malkin 6-2, 6-7 (3), 1-0 before the match went unfinished.
Kansas' season ends at 14-12 overall, as the Jayhawks made their 14th all-time NCAA Tournament appearance including its 7th under head coach Todd Chapman.
