LOGAN, Utah –No. 23 Kansas battled Utah State to a 0-0 draw on Sunday afternoon in Logan, Utah. The defensive shutout was the second of the season by Kansas.
"Today was a typical Sunday soccer game where I think both teams competed hard," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "Both teams had some quality but they had heavy legs. I think this was especially hard for us in the first road game and the altitude. You can empathize with the players if their gas tank wasn't full. I think it was a fair result. I'd like to think that this is a game that we expect to win, but we didn't do enough today."
Lie continued, "It's a good sign for our team that we improved over the game, especially after not being great the last couple second halves (of previous games). We came here to win. We leave with a tie which is slightly disappointing, but we've got to be better against teams of this caliber if we expect to get a result."
Utah State (1-1-1) held the majority of the possession in the first half, as they outshot Kansas 7-2. Sophomore goalkeeper Sophie Dawe made three saves in the first half.
Kansas (3-0-1) picked up the pressure in the second half, as they outshot Utah State 8-2 to bring the total to 10 shots in the game for the Jayhawks. Sophomore midfielder Jillian Gregorski led Kansas with three shots.
The Jayhawks drew a corner kick in the 89th minute, where junior Caroline Castans served the ball into the middle of the box where Gregorski got her head on it and directed it towards the goal, but Utah State's goalkeeper saved the ball to keep the match tied at 0-0.
Kansas held a 6-0 edge on corner kicks in the match.
