LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas soccer played No. 2 Florida State to a 1-1 draw at Rock Chalk Park on Thursday evening in front of 2,108 spectators, the third largest crowd in program history. The result against No. 2 Florida State is the first result in school history against a top two ranked opponent. Freshman
Mary Sola scored her first career goal in the draw.
With the draw, Kansas remained unbeaten this season and moved to 3-0-2 on the year. Florida State is now 2-0-1 on the season.
"We needed to find extra effort to compete with this team," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "We had some internal energy, and tons of credit to our players, but I think we also got it from the crowd. So thank you so much to Jayhawk Nation for coming out."
Lie continued, "Just very, very proud of our team. I can be tough on them, maybe a harsh critic at times, but as I just told them, it's because we have these kinds of performances in us. The way we play, the identity of our program, the tactics of our team are all about unity, are all about grit, and today it showed up."
Florida State scored first off a strike by Jordynn Dudley in the 13th minute of the match to take a 1-0 lead.
Kansas was not deterred from the early deficit and was able to find the equalizer in the first half. In the 26th minute, freshman Jordan Rowan received a pass on the left side of the box and shot the ball. Florida State's goalkeeper blocked the shot, but the ball went right to Sola, who took a shot into an empty net to score her first collegiate goal and tie the match at 1-1. The match would go to halftime even at 1-1.
The Jayhawks and Seminoles traded opportunities in the second half, as both teams had chances at breaking the tie. KU outshot FSU 6-5 in the second half, but neither team was able to find a go-ahead goal.Â
Kansas had two late opportunities in the 87th minute, as Saige Wimes shot a ball that was blocked by a FSU player. Lexi Watts received the rebound and shot the ball towards the net but was also blocked. The teams then traded possession until time ran out, resulting in a 1-1 draw.
