LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas soccer continued its hot start to the season with a 3-1 win over Drake on Sunday night at Rock Chalk Park. Kansas remains unbeaten this season, which is the longest unbeaten streak to start the season since 2023.
"One nice thing about this team is, even though I don't think we played great in the first half, we still found two goals," Kansas head coach Nate Lie said. "So our quality showed through Lexi (Watts) and Jordan (Rowan), who made excellent plays to lead up to both goals."Â
Lie continued, "I challenged the team at halftime and said we have to demand better, hold ourselves to a higher standard. I thought we came out pretty sharp in the second half. Saige (Wimes) got behind in the first few minutes and then found that goal through Jillian (Gregorski)."Â
Kansas (4-0-2) opened up the scoring with a goal in the 21st minute from senior forward Lexi Watts on a pass from nearby midfield from Emily Tobin for her fourth goal of the season. The Jayhawks scored only 11 minutes later, as Lydia Viets passed the ball from around midfield to Jordan Rowan, who dribbled around the defender to net her second goal of the season. Kansas led 2-0 at half.
Kansas was not done yet, as the Jayhawks drew a corner kick in the 51st minute of the match. Caroline Castans sent a corner kick into the middle of the box to Gregorski, who headed the ball past the goalkeeper to score her third goal of the season and to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Drake (2-2-2) scored a goal in the 73rd minute, as Isabella Balsley took a shot off a rebound to cut into the lead to make the score 3-1 in favor of Kansas.
The two teams traded possession over the final 15 minutes, as both teams had opportunities but couldn't capitalize, which led to the final score of 3-1.
Kansas outshot Drake 15-7 and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Gregorski led the Jayhawks with five shots and Sophie Dawe recorded three saves.
