LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Kansas Track & Field team is scheduled to travel to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Classic on Friday, Feb. 6. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. CT.
At the DeLoss Dodds Invitational last week, Kansas saw a lot of improvement, setting two new school records, winning four events, and finishing with 21 podium finishes. John Swabik set the new Kansas men's heptathlon record in his first competition as a Jayhawk, while Aaliyah Moore broke the women's 1,000 meter run record. Mason Meinershagen also won the World Athletics Bronze Tour women's pole vault invite, taking down top competitors from across the continent.
Kansas head coach Stanley Redwine stressed the importance of not becoming complacent this weekend, but also praised his team's ability to compete. "I thought last meet we did a really good job of taking advantage of the opportunity to compete and all around showed a lot of improvement as a team," Redwine said. "We think this is a great opportunity to continue to grow and put on some big individual event performances, but at the same time we have to stay hungry. We showed some big growth but we can't become complacent and stay where we are, because this team has a lot of talent and can continue to compete well."
In the latest USTFCCCA poll, the Kansas men's team climbed 14 spots from last week, all the way up to 22nd in the country. The women's team is ranked 60th.Â
The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. with the men's pole vault and men's weight throw invite beginning consecutively. The men's open weight throw, women's weight throw and both shot puts will follow the men's weight throw in that order, while the women's pole vault will follow the men's.Â
The men's high jump will begin at 2 p.m., with the women's high jump wrapping up the field events following its conclusion.Â
Track events will begin with the men's 3,000 meter run at 12 p.m. The women's and men's 60 meter hurdles and 60 meter dash preliminaries will begin every ten minutes starting at 1 p.m. with the women running first followed by the men in both events.Â
The men's mile will be run at 1:50 p.m. with the 60 meter hurdles and 60 meter dash finals beginning at 2:30 p.m. The men's 600 yards will be run at 3:05 p.m.
The Jayhawks will begin to wrap up their events with the men's 5K at 4:10 p.m. before the women's and men's 800 meters at 4:35 p.m. and 4:45 p.m., respectively. The 1,000 meter runs will begin at 5:15 p.m. and 5:20 p.m., while the 200 meter dashes will be run at 5:30 p.m. and 5:50 p.m., the women running before the men in both events.
