LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Kansas women’s golf team collectively had their best round in the third round of the Cardinal Cup Tuesday, but finished 14th overall in the 17-team field.
The Jayhawks improved by 10 strokes from the first to the third round. After scoring a 321 over the first round, their highest total at the event, KU improved to a 311 Tuesday.
Ariadna Fonseca Diaz was the low-scorer for the Jayhawks, carding a 77, thanks to 2-under with three birdies on her second nine.
“Ari got into a good rhythm on our second nine,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. “After the second round (where she shot a 10-over 82,) we worked with her on simplifying her swing and also her pre-shot routine and it seemed to help get her back on track.”
Pitsinee “Liz” Winyarat ended her first day of play on Sunday tied for 77th place. By Tuesday, she improved 30 places and ended the tournament in a tie for 47th place.
“Liz did a great job of making adjustments to her mental game after the first round,” O’Neil said. “In addition to focusing more on feel during her putting routine rather than overthinking each putt which gave her more confidence on the greens.”
Yi-Tsen Chou, who was competing individually, began her first two rounds strong, and was among the top-10 each day. But after shooting a 9-over 81, Chou dropped down to 35th place.
“Yi-Tsen made a few course management mistakes (Tuesday) and got herself in some difficult situations around the greens,” O’Neil said. “Overall, she hit the ball well and the tournament was a great learning experience for her.
As for the rest of the Jayhawks, Victoria Chandra finished her second tournament of the year shooting a 25-over for the tournament landing her in a tie for 66th place. Kallie Gonzales did not finish far behind shooting a 26-over and tying for 68th. Annika Cedo shot a 28-over which tied her for 76th.
The Jayhawks return to action on November 7-8 for the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas.
